To Do Research at the LBECEC You Must Complete the following Steps:
Step 1. Submit a Brieft Pre-Proposal
Before submitting a formal proposal to the UNLV Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects investigators wishing to do research at the LBECEC must provide, in writing, a brief description of the following:
This information is to be submitted to Dr. Catherine Lyons, Director of the LBECEC (702-895-3779 or catherine.lyons@unlv.edu) who will discuss any concerns and/or limitations with the primary investigator. Dr. Lyons will then contact Dr. Paul Jones, Co-Chair of the UNLV Social/Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects to give the Facility Authorization assurance. The investigator may then indicate, in the IRB proposal, that the LBECEC has given initial facility authorization for participation.

Step 2. Gain UNLV IRB Approval for the Proposed Research
Those wishing to conduct research at the LBECEC MUST obtain the approval of the UNLV Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects. Instructions for the submission of proposals to the UNLV IRB may obtained from the Office for the Protection of Human Subjects (http://www.unlv.edu/Research/OPRS/irb2.htm).
Step 3. Submit Approved IRB Proposal (with attachments) to the LBECEC Research Advisory Council
A complete copy of the following (a and b below scanned into one document, c alone as a separate document) is to be submitted to Dr. Catherine Lyons (Catherine.lyons@unlv.edu) which, taken together, constitute the formal proposal: :

Step 4. The LBECEC- Research Advisory Council Meets to Review the Proposal
The Research Advisory Council will review each proposal in a timely manner and only when necessary invite the investigator to discuss the proposal with the Council. As stated previously, the purpose of the review is to insure that the procedures described in each proposal have been reviewed and fully approved by the UNLV Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects. Additionally, the Council will determine if the procedures are reasonable in terms of the time required of children, their parents and the staff. Finally, attention will be given to the number of research projects underway at any given time to insure that the total research effort does not exceed the capacities of the Center or its staff.
Step 5. The LBECEC – Research Advisory Council Contacts the Investigator
Dr. Filler will, on behalf of the Council, contact the primary investigator and provide a copy of the signed LBECEC Approval Form.
Step 6. The Investigator Contacts the LBECEC
Upon receipt of the signed LBECEC Approval Form the investigator is free to contact Dr. Catherine Lyons, LBECEC Director to coordinate start dates, space and equipment etc.
Step 7. Upon Completion of the Research a Summary is Provided
Upon completion of the research a written summary of results and brief discussion of implications will be provided to the Research Advisory Council. In addition, as specified in the Approved IRB Proposal, results etc. will be shared with the participant staff, parents and/or children.
